Every local college (Berkely, Stanford, SF schools, community colleges) have salsa classes that everyone can take. Those tend to be cheaper than the ones taught at dance studios. School is not in session, so those classes may or may not be there in summer.

There are lots of DVDs available and clips you can watch on the internet, but from someone who’s tried to learn ballroom/latin by these methods, I gotta tell you, it’s difficult! I gave up and booked myself in classes in the end.

If you possibly can, you should try and attend a few classes.

What is worth investing in, however, is some good salsa music and some good strict-tempo ballroom and latin CDs. Hearing the music will give you a start in itself!

I have been really wanting to take salsa lessons with my husband. So, if anyone has taken any classes then please tell me about them. And also what dance would best suit the song " Now I’ve had the time of my life – dirty dancing".

Simone Salsa in Clearwater is a really good school. I’ve heard lots of good things about the instructors and variety of dance styles they offer. They have sister schools in Tampa and Brandon, too.

I don’t know which dance would go best to that song, though, sorry.

How can I become a dancer without taking dance classes?

I hate having to repeat choreography after someone else! Its boring and not fun for me! I feel like a monkey following someone, doing the same moves they are doing! I want to be creative and create when I’m dancing! Do I really have to take hip hip classes to become a good dancer or is there another way?

If you doing this just for fun, then do what you want. But if you’re serious about learning hip hop, then you have to actually "study" it. And, yes, studying can be boring at times. It takes work. But copying someone else’s moves is the key part of training your brain and muscles to transfer what they SEE and HEAR into MOVEMENT. Without that kind of training, you would never be able to be professional (if you’re interested in doing that) because you could not follow the directions of a choreographer.

It takes practice of following someone over and over – for YEARS – to get to the advanced level where you can pick up moves with just one or two demonstrations. Also realize that if you can’t learn from a teacher, you’d never be able to teach, yourself, because you wouldn’t have experience in communicating about moves and how to give corrections when a move isn’t right. Learning a style of movement is a lot like learning a foreign language. There is a lot that your brain and muscles process when they perfectly reproduce someone else’s movements that is not the same as making up your own moves. When you make up your own moves, you only do what you CAN do instead of pushing yourself to match someone else’s moves. You also need to hear when your move isn’t right and practice fixing it or else you develop bad habits.

But if this is just for the dance floor, then go ahead and be creative.

Is there ballet classes with polite clothing?

I’m 15 years old and I want to take up ballet class. I acknowledge that most ballet dancers start ballet from a younger age, but my age isn’t too late yet. My mom will only allow me to take ballet classes if there is one that allows me to wear polite clothes. Skirt must be at least to the calf and the top must be with sleeves. Please help me i really really wanna join ballet. This is very important :’(

It’s not too late to take up ballet. As a hobby,nope it isn’t but to become a professional, it’s too late because the competition is too hard and is very competitive in the dance world.

‘Polite clothing’? Well you don’t really need ‘polite clothing’ to be honest. Most studios have their uniform code as..
- Leotard. Sleeves. Sometimes it can be with sleeves
- Ballet tights
- Ballet shoes
- Ballet skirt(SOME may have that)

You can wear a wrap over if your mum is really that conscious about the top being with sleeves.

Ballet skirts are usually only up to your knees. Sometimes some ballet studios will have a uniform code as a tutu for advanced classes.

Your mum shouldn’t be worrying about the ballet uniform. It is definitely fine. After all, you’re just attending ballet class right? I mean in ballet concerts,you will wear more fancy, more nicer costumes. And this is only practice. And it really just depends on the studio about their dress code. You just have to see what studio is suitable for you.

Usually if your skirt is up to your calf, if you practice turns and they will get more powerful in a higher level each year, it may be a bit hard. I mean,you can wear like fancy costumes, some may even go down to the floor or whatever, but you would have to practice first before you’d go in a fancy costume. You know what I mean? That’s why the leotard, ballet tights and ballet shoes are very suitable for ballet training. It’s easier and the teachers will want to see if you’re doing something correctly

How can I become better at hip hop dance?

So I just started taking hip hop dance for beginners last week, but I find it super hard to keep up. My dance instructor just does the moves without explaining them and she expects us to keep up and memorize them. I have pretty good memory, but sometimes the moves just don’t come out right. They look awkward and unnatural. How can I look like I am actually hip hip dancing and not just moving around awkwardly?

Find someone in the class who can break down some steps for you. I’ve never met a hip hop dancer who didn’t want to help me learn what they do. And practice with them whenever possible.
If the teacher ever breaks down any steps and teaches how to do it such as pops or the moonwalk for example, practice what she shows you every day for a certain amount of time. Also if she does any warm up routines that involve things like body isolations, practice those on your own at home daily as well.

There are lots and lots of how to videos on youtube.com that I used for inspiration when I started doing hip hop a few years ago. Do searches for "how to pop and lock", "how to glide", etc.
And besides practice and practice and practice, just don’t quit!
You will alwasy feel awkward until you’ve learned the steps and feel confident about it, so just accept that you’ll look goofy while you’re learning and practicing, its ok, its part of the learning process!
If this teacher doesn’t teach you much, you will still learn by being exposed to the dances, and you might want to seek out a better teacher for your next class.

My sister is needding some ideas of music that would be needed in a modern ballroom dance for a project thagt she will be startin at the start of febuary, actually in a couple of weeks?

There are two types of dance that is called Modern. In one case, Ballroom and Modern are synonyms and can be used interchangeably. There is a different style of dancing that is Modern Ballet that is often referred to as Modern. Before you give her advice double-check which Modern is she referring to. If you mean "modern" as simply opposite to "outdated" – below are a couple of links.
